Covering games from Tuesday, September 29

⚡ The Night in Review

If you slept through Tuesday night, you missed an absolute eleven-goal rollercoaster in Edmonton. Paul Cotter played the hero for the visiting Vancouver Canucks, burying his second goal of the contest in overtime to seal a wild 6-5 victory and spoil Evan Bouchard’s massive multi-point performance for the Oilers. Things were far stingier out East, where elite goaltending took center stage in a pair of grueling defensive stalemates. Gustav Forsling shattered a 64-minute deadlock with only five seconds remaining in overtime to lift Florida past Carolina 1-0, while Jeremy Swayman outdueled Igor Shesterkin in Boston before the Bruins erupted late for an emphatic 3-0 shutout. Meanwhile, Montreal secured early bragging rights and two crucial points in the Atlantic Division standings, recovering from a William Nylander strike just 48 seconds in to edge Toronto 3-2. Out West, Jack Eichel looked in midseason form, steering the Vegas Golden Knights to the top of the Pacific with a comfortable 5-2 win over Chicago. It was a night of stark contrasts, swinging from an eleven-goal fire fight in Alberta to Florida’s buzzer-beater with five ticks left on the clock. If Tuesday was any indication, the margin for error across the league is already razor-thin, and the race for divisional positioning has begun in earnest.

Final · OTOT

Just when Raleigh braced for a shootout after nearly 65 minutes of punishing, scoreless hockey, Gustav Forsling settled the grudge match with five seconds left on the clock. Forsling took a feed from Carter Verhaeghe and buried the winner at 4:55 of overtime, snapping a stalemate that felt more like May playoff trench warfare than September hockey. The tone was set late in the first period when heavyweights Bokondji Imama and Nicolas Deslauriers dropped the gloves, sparking an evening featuring 84 combined hits. Space was nonexistent through three periods. Jacob Markstrom stood tall in net for Florida, turning aside all 15 Carolina shots to secure the shutout. At the other end, Brandon Bussi was equally sharp with 19 saves, continuously frustrating Florida’s attack until Forsling’s buzzer-beater finally cracked the code. Grinding out two points in a bruising, low-event battle is the ultimate Panthers trademark, and they will look to carry that defensive steel deeper into their opening-week road trip.

William Nylander gave Toronto the dream start just 48 seconds into the latest chapter of this historic rivalry, but Alexandre Carrier and the Canadiens had no interest in playing a supporting role. Montreal clawed back midway through the opening frame when Josh Anderson cleaned up a setup from Carrier and Kirby Dach. Early in the second, Zach Bolduc finished off another Anderson feed to silence the home crowd. Carrier then turned hero in the third period, snapping an unassisted strike past Sergei Bobrovsky with under seven minutes remaining to provide crucial insurance. Nylander struck again two minutes later off feeds from Easton Cowan and John Tavares, sparking a frantic late push, but Jakub Dobes locked it down. Dobes turned away 26 of 28 shots, withstanding Toronto’s late onslaught with the extra attacker to seal Montreal’s first victory of the campaign. The Canadiens look to build on this gritty rivalry win as their early-season road trip rolls on.

For fifty-six grueling minutes, Jeremy Swayman and Igor Shesterkin traded world-class saves in a scoreless defensive war that felt more like mid-May than opening night. Then, the Bruins ignited an avalanche. Boston struck three times in a breathless 75-second burst late in the third period to turn a deadlocked duel into a 3-0 rout of the Rangers. Fraser Minten cracked the code with just 3:46 remaining, finishing a feed from Mason Lohrei to break the stalemate. Fifty-two seconds later, JJ Peterka doubled the lead off a clean setup from Elias and Hampus Lindholm. Before New York could even catch its breath, Mark Kastelic buried another, with Minten picking up his second point of the night on the primary helper. Swayman was flawless, turning aside all 24 shots he faced to lock down the opening-night shutout in a bruising contest featuring 73 combined hits. If this late-game surge is any indication of Boston’s third-period killer instinct, the Atlantic Division is in for a long winter.

Evan Bouchard did everything humanly possible to carry Edmonton on Tuesday night, but Paul Cotter had the final say in an absolute barnburner. Cotter buried his second goal of the game two minutes into overtime, sealing a wild 6-5 Vancouver victory after the Oilers nearly pulled off an astonishing third-period escape. Vancouver seemed in complete control early in the third. Tied 2-2 through forty minutes, the Canucks struck three times in barely four minutes—highlighted by an Elias Pettersson power-play blast—to build a 5-2 cushion. Cue the chaos. Bouchard, already sitting on a pair, assisted Vasily Podkolzin before completing his hat trick just 24 seconds later. With 43 seconds left on the clock, Podkolzin struck again on the man advantage to force extra time. Edmonton threw 38 hits and peppered Kevin Lankinen with 37 shots, but Cotter quieted the building off a feed from Max Sasson at three-on-three. If this rivalry clash is any preview, the Pacific Division race will be pure theater all winter.

Jack Eichel wasted no time showing he is in midseason form, driving Vegas to an emphatic 5-2 opening-night victory over Chicago. The Golden Knights took control early when Victor Olofsson converted on the power play midway through the first period, quickly followed by rookie sensation Trevor Connelly finishing off a crisp feed from Shea Theodore. Chicago pushed back in the second via Jordan Greenway, but Eichel responded three minutes later with a clinical finish to restore the two-goal cushion. Even when Patrick Kane pounced unassisted early in the third to cut the deficit to 3-2, Noah Hanifin snuffed out the comeback hopes just 39 seconds later by snapping a rebound past Spencer Knight. Mark Stone added the late dagger with under three minutes remaining, fed by Eichel on a fluid rush, while Carter Hart locked down the crease with 24 stops. If this relentless Vegas offense keeps humming at this tempo, the rest of the Pacific Division is in serious trouble.
