The Night in Review

Andrei Svechnikov played the ultimate heartbreaker in Montreal on Monday night, silencing the Bell Centre with an overtime winner to give the Carolina Hurricanes a 3-2 victory. The Hurricanes fired an absolute barrage at Canadiens goaltender Jakub Dobes, who put on a spectacular show before finally cracking in the extra frame. Carolina now holds a pivotal 2-1 series lead in the Eastern Conference Final, taking control of a matchup that feels destined to go the distance. While the East is shaping up to be a grueling battle, the Western Conference Final is a completely different story. The Vegas Golden Knights have pushed the powerhouse Colorado Avalanche to the absolute brink, holding a commanding 3-0 series lead. Vegas can punch their ticket to the Stanley Cup Final with a sweep in their next contest, leaving the Avalanche desperately searching for a lifeline. We are now deep into the final four, with the earlier rounds leaving plenty of heavyweights in the dust. Carolina remains a juggernaut, having swept both Ottawa and Philadelphia in the opening rounds, but Montreal is finally making them bleed. The Canadiens have already survived consecutive seven-game wars against Tampa Bay and Buffalo, proving they are comfortable playing with their backs against the wall. Sebastian Aho continues to drive the bus for Carolina, earning first-star honors last night to keep his dominant postseason rolling. If Vegas finishes the job out West, the Hurricanes and Canadiens will be fighting not just for the East, but for the right to face a highly rested Golden Knights squad.

Andrei Svechnikov played the overtime hero deep into the night, finally solving a spectacular Jakub Dobes to steal Game 3 in Montreal. The Hurricanes fired an absolute barrage at the Canadiens netminder, outshooting the hosts 38 to 13. Carolina struck first midway through the opening frame via Shayne Gostisbehere, only for Mike Matheson to answer. Taylor Hall restored the Carolina lead less than a minute later. Montreal pushed back early in the second period when Lane Hutson capitalized on the power play, notably assisted by Cole Caufield and Dobes himself. From there, the Montreal goaltender stole the show, matching Carolina chance for chance through a scoreless third period. Frederik Andersen had a surprisingly quiet night at the other end, needing just 11 saves to secure the victory. The tension crested deep into overtime until Svechnikov took a feed from Seth Jarvis at 14:06 of the extra frame and buried the game-winning goal. After surviving the goaltending duel, CAR leads 2-1 in the Conference Finals. Montreal will desperately need to generate more shots to protect home ice in Game 4.
