The Night in Review

A catastrophic collapse in the desert has the Colorado Avalanche staring into the playoff abyss. Despite a desperate start to climb back into the Western Conference Final on Sunday night, Colorado let a crucial Game 3 slip through their fingers. The Vegas Golden Knights rallied for a 5-3 victory, pushing the Avalanche to the absolute brink of elimination. Tomas Hertl and Mark Stone led the charge for Vegas, suffocating any hope of a Colorado resurgence. Mitch Marner also chipped in with a clutch performance to ensure the Golden Knights maintained their momentum. Now, Vegas holds a commanding 3-0 series lead and is just one win away from punching their ticket to the Stanley Cup Final. While the West looks entirely one-sided, the Eastern Conference Final remains a total toss-up. Carolina and Montreal are currently locked in a tight 1-1 battle, guaranteeing that series will go deep into the week. The Canadiens and Hurricanes are fighting tooth and nail, a stark contrast to the absolute buzzsaw Vegas has become on the other side of the bracket. The Avalanche swept their first-round matchup and cruised through the second, but they suddenly look entirely outmatched when it matters most. They will need a miracle to avoid being swept themselves, as history heavily favors a Vegas squad that looks utterly unstoppable right now.

A catastrophic collapse has the Colorado Avalanche staring into the playoff abyss. Desperate to climb back into the Western Conference Final, Colorado exploded out of the gate in Game 3. Gabriel Landeskog and Nazem Kadri struck early, and a Jack Drury shorthanded tally made it 3-0 before the first intermission. But the Golden Knights flipped the script entirely in the middle frame. Mark Stone ignited the comeback with a power-play strike just 19 seconds into the second period. William Karlsson followed up minutes later, and Keegan Kolesar tied the game midway through the period to send the Vegas crowd into a frenzy. Tomas Hertl completed the stunning reversal midway through the third, burying the game-winner off a feed from Stone. Brett Howden sealed the 5-3 victory with under a minute remaining, capping a relentless run of five unanswered goals against a shell-shocked Scott Wedgewood. Following the massive comeback, VGK leads 3-0 in the series. The Avalanche must now figure out how to salvage their 121-point season when they face elimination in Game 4.
