Covering games from Sunday, May 10

The Night in Review

Anaheim refused to let their season slip to the brink on Sunday night. Powered by a three-assist masterclass from Cutter Gauthier, the Ducks edged the Vegas Golden Knights 4-3 to tie their second-round series at two games apiece. It turns this Pacific Division clash into a tense best-of-three sprint to the Western Conference Finals. Over in the East, the Bell Centre was briefly silenced when Buffalo's Tage Thompson scored just 53 seconds into Game 3. But the Canadiens responded with a crushing offensive tidal wave, burying the Sabres 6-2 to take a 2-1 series lead. Lane Hutson and Alex Newhook led the charge as Montreal grabbed the momentum on home ice. The second round bracket is officially taking shape. While Vegas and Anaheim are locked in a dead heat, the Carolina Hurricanes are already resting their legs after a dominant four-game sweep of the Philadelphia Flyers. Carolina now sits back and waits to see who survives the Montreal and Buffalo series. Meanwhile, the Colorado Avalanche hold a narrow 2-1 edge over the Minnesota Wild in the only other active matchup. With three of the four second-round series currently separated by a single game or less, the intensity is reaching a boiling point. The margin for error is officially gone as we inch closer to the final four.

The Bell Centre crowd was stunned just 53 seconds into Game 3 when Tage Thompson struck for Buffalo, but the Canadiens responded with an overwhelming offensive tidal wave. Following Alex Newhook's equalizer late in the first period, Montreal completely took over the middle frame. The Canadiens erupted for three goals in a six-minute span during the second. Masterfully orchestrating the man advantage, Lane Hutson fed Cole Caufield and Juraj Slafkovsky for power-play strikes, while Zachary Bolduc added an even-strength tally. Rasmus Dahlin tried to spark the top-seeded Sabres with a late second-period goal, but Newhook and Kirby Dach put the game out of reach in the third. As the blowout worsened, frustration boiled over for Buffalo. With under three minutes remaining, a massive scrum resulted in four misconducts, setting a bitter tone for the rest of the matchup. Goaltender Jakub Dobes was rock solid, making 26 saves in the 6-2 win. After this statement victory, MTL leads 2-1 in the series, and the Sabres will desperately need a reset before Game 4.

The Anaheim Ducks refused to be pushed to the brink of elimination on their home ice. Powered by a three-assist masterpiece from Cutter Gauthier and a relentless physical game, the Ducks edged the Vegas Golden Knights 4-3. With the hard-fought victory, they leave the series tied 2-2. Alex Killorn set the tone early, factoring into Beckett Sennecke's first-period power-play strike before burying a man-advantage goal of his own late in the second. Vegas kept punching back, leaning heavily on Mitch Marner, who collected three assists of his own. Pavel Dorofeyev and Brett Howden both found equalizers to keep the Golden Knights in the fight. The turning point arrived early in the third period when Ian Moore fired home an even-strength tally to give Anaheim a crucial two-goal cushion. Tomas Hertl managed to pull Vegas within one with just over a minute remaining, but Lukas Dostal shut the door from there, finishing with 18 saves to secure the win. The tension now shifts back to the desert, where a pivotal Game 5 awaits.
