Covering games from Saturday, May 9

The Night in Review

The Carolina Hurricanes are the first team to punch their ticket to the Conference Finals. In a dramatic Saturday night finish, Carolina completed a relentless sweep of the Philadelphia Flyers with a 3-2 overtime victory on hostile ice. The Flyers fought desperately to stave off elimination, but the Hurricanes simply refused to lose. Carolina now gets to rest and recover while the rest of the second round grinds on. They will await the winner of the clash between the Buffalo Sabres and Montreal Canadiens, a tightly contested series that is currently deadlocked at one game apiece. Out West, the Minnesota Wild refused to be pushed to the brink of elimination. Facing a daunting two-game deficit against the Colorado Avalanche, the Wild returned to St. Paul and delivered a massive 5-1 statement win. Kirill Kaprizov sparked the offense, while Jesper Wallstedt shut the door in the crease to cut Colorado's series lead to 2-1. The second round bracket is officially taking shape with one team through and the remaining three matchups looking incredibly tight. Vegas holds a narrow 2-1 edge over Anaheim, and the Western Conference picture is far from decided. The absolute biggest takeaway from Saturday is just how terrifying Carolina looks right now, boasting an immaculate 8-0 record this postseason after sweeping both Ottawa and Philadelphia in consecutive rounds.

The Carolina Hurricanes have punched their ticket to the Eastern Conference Final, completing a relentless sweep of the Philadelphia Flyers with a 3-2 overtime victory. Facing elimination on home ice, Philadelphia fought desperately to extend their season, but the result is final: CAR wins series 4-0. Tyson Foerster gave the Flyers early hope with a first-period strike, but Jackson Blake leveled the score midway through the second. The third period brought a frantic exchange. Logan Stankoven pushed Carolina ahead early in the frame, only for Alex Bump to answer back less than two minutes later, setting the stage for sudden death. Overtime in an elimination game is peak hockey theater, and Blake played the hero. Just five and a half minutes into the extra frame, he took a feed from Taylor Hall and buried his second goal of the night. The series-clinching tally finally solved a brilliant Dan Vladar, who made 37 saves in a valiant losing effort for the Flyers. Carolina now gets some well-earned rest while they await their next opponent in the third round.

Facing a daunting 2-0 deficit against the Central Division juggernauts, the Minnesota Wild returned to St. Paul and delivered a statement 5-1 victory over the Colorado Avalanche. Kirill Kaprizov ignited the home crowd late in the opening frame, opening the scoring before setting up Quinn Hughes on the power play just over a minute later. Ryan Hartman extended the lead early in the second with another man-advantage marker, chasing Colorado starter Scott Wedgewood after he allowed three goals on twelve shots. Nathan MacKinnon finally broke through for Colorado midway through the second period, but Brock Faber answered a mere twenty seconds later to crush any hopes of an Avalanche comeback. Jesper Wallstedt was the true backbone for Minnesota, turning aside 35 shots to stifle a desperate, high-flying offense. The Wild also set a punishing physical tone, outhitting the visitors 39-25 to protect their young netminder before Matt Boldy sealed it in the final seconds of the third. Despite the blowout loss, COL leads 2-1 in the second-round matchup. Minnesota will look to draw even when the puck drops for Game 4.
