The Night in Review

The Montreal Canadiens wasted absolutely no time flipping the script on Friday night, silencing a raucous KeyBank Center crowd to even their second-round series. Alex Newhook sparked a dominant five-goal outburst, striking in the opening minutes to help Montreal steal home-ice advantage with a crucial 5-1 victory over the Buffalo Sabres. This Atlantic Division clash is now deadlocked at one game apiece as the battle shifts north of the border. Out west, Mitch Marner put on an absolute playoff masterclass to give the Vegas Golden Knights the upper hand in the Pacific Division finals. Vegas ambushed the Anaheim Ducks with a three-goal first period, cruising to a 6-2 blowout in Game 3 to take a 2-1 series lead. Carter Hart stood tall in the crease to ensure the Ducks never found a way back into the contest. Looking at the wider playoff picture, the second round is quickly separating the true contenders from the rest of the pack. While Montreal and Buffalo are locked in a tight battle, other matchups are dangerously close to early conclusions. The Carolina Hurricanes have pushed the Philadelphia Flyers to the absolute brink with a commanding 3-0 series lead, while the Colorado Avalanche look equally terrifying up 2-0 on the Minnesota Wild. With Carolina sharpening their brooms for a potential sweep, the pressure is entirely on Philadelphia to keep their season alive. We will soon find out if the Flyers can generate a miracle, or if the Hurricanes will become the first team to punch their ticket to the conference finals.

The Montreal Canadiens wasted absolutely no time flipping the script in Buffalo, striking twice before the five-minute mark to seize control of Game 2. Alex Newhook silenced the KeyBank Center crowd just 1:36 into the first period. Less than three minutes later, Mike Matheson doubled the Montreal advantage. Newhook struck again early in the second frame to make it 3-0, providing more than enough cushion for Jakub Dobes. The Montreal netminder was stellar, turning aside 28 of 29 shots. Buffalo tried to physically bully their way back into the contest, throwing a massive 44 hits, and Zach Benson finally broke through with under a minute remaining in the middle frame. But Montreal held firm despite taking 22 penalty minutes on the night. Alexandre Carrier restored the three-goal cushion early in the third, and Nick Suzuki capped off the 5-1 rout. The final minutes featured plenty of bad blood, highlighted by a misconduct to Josh Anderson. Series tied 1-1 as the Atlantic Division heavyweights shift to the Bell Centre for Game 3.

Mitch Marner delivered a playoff masterclass to seize momentum in the Pacific Division finals. The Vegas Golden Knights stormed out of the gates in Game 3, ambushing the Anaheim Ducks with three first-period goals. Shea Theodore opened the scoring just over a minute in, and a back-breaking shorthanded tally from Brayden McNabb midway through the frame chased Lukas Dostal, who managed just five saves on the night. From there, it was the Marner show. After capping the opening period with a late power-play strike, he added two more even-strength goals in the second to complete the hat trick and build an insurmountable five-goal cushion. Carter Hart was stellar at the other end, stopping 31 shots to frustrate the home crowd. Anaheim showed physical pushback, racking up 53 hits, and managed third-period goals from Beckett Sennecke and Chris Kreider, but Brett Howden sealed the 6-2 final in the dying minutes. With the dominant road victory, VGK leads 2-1. Anaheim desperately needs a response in Game 4 to avoid facing elimination when the series shifts back to the desert.
