The Night in Review

The Colorado Avalanche brought out the brooms on Sunday night. They dismantled the Los Angeles Kings 5-1 to complete a ruthless first-round sweep. Nathan MacKinnon and company are the second team to punch their ticket to the second round, joining Carolina as they await the winner of the Dallas and Minnesota series. Meanwhile, the Edmonton Oilers are suddenly staring into the abyss after a devastating overtime loss. Kasperi Kapanen scored just 38 seconds into sudden death to give the Anaheim Ducks a 4-3 victory and a commanding 3-1 series lead. The Ducks are now one win away from a massive upset. Over in the East, the Buffalo Sabres absolutely ambushed the Boston Bruins with a four-goal first period, cruising to a 6-1 blowout. Buffalo now holds a 3-1 series advantage, pushing Boston to the brink of elimination alongside Edmonton and Pittsburgh. Not every matchup is lopsided, though. Brandon Hagel broke hearts in Montreal with a late third-period goal, completing a stunning comeback to knot the Lightning and Canadiens at two games apiece. With Tampa Bay and Montreal joining Dallas and Minnesota in 2-2 deadlocks, we are guaranteed at least a few long, grinding battles. Looking at the overall bracket, two juggernauts have already swept their way through, while three other teams are just one win away from advancing. The pressure dial is officially cranked to maximum for the desperate teams fighting to keep their seasons alive.

The Buffalo Sabres absolutely ambushed the Boston Bruins, erupting for four first-period goals to seize total control of this elimination matchup. Peyton Krebs started the onslaught just four minutes in, and before the period was halfway done, Josh Doan and Zach Benson had completely deflated the home crowd. Bowen Byram capped the devastating opening frame at 14:24, putting the game out of reach early. Alex Lyon was a brick wall at the other end, stopping 23 of 24 shots to earn first-star honors. Jeremy Swayman struggled mightily for Boston, allowing six goals on 29 shots as Buffalo continued to press. Things turned ugly late in the third period when Nikita Zadorov was handed a five-minute major and game misconduct for cross-checking, while Benson took a misconduct of his own. Sean Kuraly managed a late shorthanded goal with under a minute remaining, but the damage was long done. Following the commanding 6-1 victory, BUF leads 3-1. The Sabres now have a chance to close out the series and advance on home ice.

The Colorado Avalanche have punched their ticket to the second round, overwhelming the Los Angeles Kings 5-1 to complete a ruthless sweep. Facing elimination, the Kings tried to drag Colorado into a physical battle, racking up 50 hits and 26 penalty minutes. But talent quickly won out over tenacity. Nathan MacKinnon was an absolute force, opening the scoring on the power play midway through the first period. After Cale Makar doubled the lead early in the second with an unassisted effort, Los Angeles found a glimmer of hope when Joel Edmundson beat Scott Wedgewood late in the middle frame. That was the only blemish on Wedgewood's night, as he calmly turned aside 24 shots. The Avalanche shattered any comeback dreams in the third. Nicolas Roy and Devon Toews scored just three minutes apart early in the period, and MacKinnon buried his second of the night with under six minutes remaining. COL wins series 4-0, and the Central Division juggernauts now get some well-earned rest while awaiting their second-round opponent.

Brandon Hagel broke Montreal hearts late in the third period to complete a stunning comeback for Tampa Bay. The Canadiens came out flying in front of a raucous Bell Centre crowd, throwing fifty hits and building a two-goal advantage midway through the second period on tallies from Zachary Bolduc and Cole Caufield. But playoff momentum is a fickle beast. Jake Guentzel gave the Lightning a crucial lifeline with under a minute remaining in the middle frame, shifting the energy entirely. Tampa Bay dictated the final twenty minutes. Hagel tied things up on the power play just under two minutes into the third, finishing a setup from Nikita Kucherov and Guentzel. Then, with under five minutes left in regulation, Hagel struck again at even strength to seal the 3-2 victory. Andrei Vasilevskiy shut the door from there, making sixteen saves on the night. The Lightning showed their veteran championship pedigree by refusing to fold under intense pressure. With the Series tied 2-2, this heavyweight Atlantic Division clash now shifts back to Florida for a pivotal Game 5.

Facing elimination, the Edmonton Oilers threw everything at the Anaheim Ducks, building an early two-goal lead before sudden-death heartbreak set in. Kasperi Kapanen stunned the crowd just 38 seconds into the first period, and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins doubled the advantage on the power play shortly after. Anaheim refused to fold. Cutter Gauthier and Mikael Granlund capitalized on second-period power plays to erase the deficit and shift the momentum. Evan Bouchard restored the Edmonton lead early in the third with a blistering man-advantage strike set up by Connor McDavid. The Ducks kept pushing, and Jeffrey Viel found the equalizer with under seven minutes remaining in regulation to force overtime. The extra frame provided peak playoff drama but ended quickly. Two and a half minutes into overtime, Ryan Poehling sent the fans into a frenzy, beating Tristan Jarry to seal the 4-3 comeback victory. With the dust settled, ANA leads 3-1 in the series. The Oilers now head home to Alberta needing a desperate victory in Game 5 to save their season.
