Covering games from Thursday, June 4

The Night in Review

Vegas was ten minutes away from taking a dominant 2-0 stranglehold on the Stanley Cup Final on Thursday night, but the Carolina Hurricanes absolutely refused to fold. Down 2-0 midway through the third period, the Hurricanes mounted a furious comeback to force overtime and eventually snatch a 4-3 victory. The dramatic win ties the series at one game apiece as the battle for the Cup shifts to the desert. Brett Howden looked like he was going to be the hero for the Golden Knights, potting goals in the first and second periods to build that early cushion. But Carolina's depth took over when it mattered most. Seth Jarvis and veteran Jordan Staal sparked the late-game heroics alongside Logan Stankoven, tilting the ice and keeping the restless home crowd alive. Looking at the bracket, this is exactly the heavyweight clash we were promised. Both of these teams steamrolled their way to the Final and are facing real adversity for the first time. Carolina has lost just one game in this entire postseason, sweeping Ottawa and Philadelphia before dispatching Montreal in five. Vegas has been just as ruthless, highlighted by a stunning four-game sweep of Colorado in the Western Conference Final. Now, we finally have a matchup that looks destined to go deep into June. The Hurricanes showed incredible resilience to avoid an 0-2 hole, and the pressure is officially on Vegas to quickly forget their third-period collapse before the puck drops for Game 3.

Vegas looked to be taking a stranglehold on the Stanley Cup Final, up 2-0 midway through the third period. Then chaos erupted. Brett Howden scored in the first and second periods to give the Golden Knights a comfortable cushion, but Carolina's relentless physical game finally cracked the visitors. Midway through the third, Logan Stankoven broke the shutout. Two minutes later, Mark Jankowski tied the game, and Jordan Staal capped a stunning three-goal surge on the power play at 15:25. Vegas refused to go quietly. With just 1:21 left in regulation, Mark Stone buried a Mitch Marner feed to force sudden death. The tension of playoff overtime was short-lived, however. Just 3:56 into the extra frame, Seth Jarvis sent the home crowd into a frenzy with a power-play strike, beating Carter Hart to complete the 4-3 comeback victory. With the Series tied 1-1, the battle for the Cup now shifts to the Nevada desert for a pivotal Game 3.
