The Montreal Canadiens flipped a chaotic Game 5 entirely on its head, rallying from a first-period deficit to push the Atlantic Division champions to the brink. Buffalo came out flying at home, taking three separate leads in a wild opening frame that featured five goals in the first eleven minutes. Konsta Helenius capped the early barrage to give the Sabres a 3-2 edge. Montreal took complete control from there. Jakub Dobes locked down the crease with a stellar 33-save performance, giving his offense time to chase Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen. Midway through the second period, Josh Anderson tied the game, sparking a devastating run of four unanswered Canadiens goals. Nick Suzuki and Ivan Demidov both struck on the power play to put the contest out of reach, heavily aided by Juraj Slafkovsky who collected three assists on the night. Frustrations boiled over with under three minutes remaining when Zach Benson and Alex Newhook traded misconducts. MTL leads 3-2, setting up a massive Game 6 back in Quebec where the Canadiens can eliminate the top-seeded Sabres.
