The Night in Review

The Vegas Golden Knights are heading back to the Western Conference Final. They walked into Anaheim on Thursday night and dismantled the Ducks 5-1, closing out their second-round series in six games. Vegas completely suffocated Anaheim's attack to punch their ticket to the third round and end a hard-fought series. With the dominant road victory, the Golden Knights set up a heavyweight clash against the Colorado Avalanche, who made quick work of Minnesota earlier this week. The Western Conference bracket is now officially set, promising an explosive matchup between two absolute powerhouses. Meanwhile, the Eastern Conference is still waiting to crown its final contender. The Montreal Canadiens flipped a chaotic Game 5 entirely on its head, rallying from an early deficit to stun the Sabres 6-3 in Buffalo. Nick Suzuki, Juraj Slafkovsky, and Ivan Demidov led a relentless Montreal attack that has suddenly pushed the Atlantic Division champions to the brink of elimination. Montreal now holds a 3-2 series lead and can finish the job on home ice. Whoever survives this grueling matchup will earn the right to face the rested Carolina Hurricanes, who have been waiting comfortably since sweeping Philadelphia. Buffalo now faces the most terrifying reality in playoff hockey, needing two straight wins to save their season and avoid a devastating second-round exit.

The Montreal Canadiens flipped a chaotic Game 5 entirely on its head, rallying from a first-period deficit to push the Atlantic Division champions to the brink. Buffalo came out flying at home, taking three separate leads in a wild opening frame that featured five goals in the first eleven minutes. Konsta Helenius capped the early barrage to give the Sabres a 3-2 edge. Montreal took complete control from there. Jakub Dobes locked down the crease with a stellar 33-save performance, giving his offense time to chase Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen. Midway through the second period, Josh Anderson tied the game, sparking a devastating run of four unanswered Canadiens goals. Nick Suzuki and Ivan Demidov both struck on the power play to put the contest out of reach, heavily aided by Juraj Slafkovsky who collected three assists on the night. Frustrations boiled over with under three minutes remaining when Zach Benson and Alex Newhook traded misconducts. MTL leads 3-2, setting up a massive Game 6 back in Quebec where the Canadiens can eliminate the top-seeded Sabres.

The Vegas Golden Knights have punched their ticket to the Western Conference Final, overpowering the Anaheim Ducks 5-1 to close out their second-round matchup. With the dominant road victory, VGK wins series 4-2, ending Anaheim's season. Facing elimination, the Ducks were immediately put on their heels. Just over a minute into the opening frame, Mitch Marner stunned the Anaheim crowd with an early strike. Vegas kept their foot on the gas, expanding the lead to 3-0 before the first intermission thanks to a backbreaking shorthanded goal from Brett Howden and a power-play marker by Shea Theodore. Anaheim showed a brief pulse midway through the second period when Mikael Granlund finally solved Carter Hart on the man advantage. However, Hart was spectacular under pressure, turning aside 31 of 32 shots to suffocate the Ducks' offense. Pavel Dorofeyev erased any lingering doubt in the third period, scoring two even-strength goals to seal the victory while Anaheim netminder Lukas Dostal struggled at the other end. Vegas now rests up and awaits their next opponent.
