The Night in Review

The Colorado Avalanche are heading to the Western Conference Final after a heart-stopping overtime thriller on Wednesday night. Trailing for most of Game 5, Colorado pulled off a stunning late comeback to defeat the Minnesota Wild 4-3 and take the series four games to one. Brett Kulak and Martin Necas played hero for the Avs, sending a desperate Minnesota squad packing. Colorado now gets a well-deserved rest as they await their next opponent. They will face the winner of the Vegas and Anaheim series, which is currently sitting on a knife's edge. The Golden Knights hold a narrow 3-2 series lead over the Ducks, with a massive Game 6 looming to see if Anaheim can push things the distance. Over in the East, the Carolina Hurricanes are already resting their legs after a dominant four-game sweep of the Philadelphia Flyers. Carolina's Eastern Conference Final matchup is still completely up in the air. The Buffalo Sabres and Montreal Canadiens are locked in an absolute dogfight, deadlocked at two games apiece. With two spots in the final four officially claimed, the pressure on the remaining contenders is reaching a boiling point. The Avalanche have now punched their ticket with just one total loss through two full rounds of these playoffs. We will see if that sheer dominance carries over when the puck drops on the Conference Finals.

The Colorado Avalanche are advancing after completing a stunning comeback to eliminate the Minnesota Wild. Facing elimination, the Wild came out desperate in Game 5. They ambushed Mackenzie Blackwood, building a massive 3-0 first-period lead thanks to a goal from Marcus Johansson just 34 seconds in and a pair of tallies from Nick Foligno. Blackwood looked shaky, but Colorado tightened up defensively, allowing Minnesota just 13 shots all night. The Avalanche slowly chipped away. Parker Kelly got them on the board midway through the second period, but time was running out in the third. Then came the late-game magic. Jack Drury scored with under four minutes remaining, and Nathan MacKinnon tied it up at 18:37 to force overtime and shatter Minnesota's hopes. The drama in the extra frame was swift. Just 3:52 into overtime, Brett Kulak played the hero, burying the game-winner off a feed from Martin Necas. COL wins series 4-1 with the thrilling 4-3 victory. The Avalanche now get some well-earned rest while they await their Western Conference Final opponent.
