The Night in Review

The first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs ended with a massive shockwave on Sunday night. The Montreal Canadiens marched into Florida and stunned the Tampa Bay Lightning 2-1 in a decisive Game 7. Despite being heavily outshot, Montreal leaned on a spectacular goaltending performance from Jakub Dobes to complete the massive upset and send the Lightning packing. With that tense finish, the opening round is officially completely in the books. The Canadiens have punched their ticket to the second round, where they will face off against the waiting Buffalo Sabres. Across the rest of the bracket, the next phase is already taking shape, with Carolina and Colorado both holding early 1-0 leads in their respective series. Speaking of Colorado, if you prefer tight defensive playoff hockey, you might want to look away from what happened in Denver. Game 1 of the Central Division clash between the Avalanche and the Minnesota Wild turned into an absolute track meet. Colorado eventually outlasted Minnesota in a chaotic 9-6 shootout, fueled by massive nights from Cale Makar and Martin Necas. Seeing fifteen combined goals in a single playoff game is a jarring shift from the grueling battles we usually expect in May. As the Vegas Golden Knights and Anaheim Ducks prepare to drop the puck on their second-round series, we will soon find out if the goaltenders can finally reclaim the crease.

The Montreal Canadiens have punched their ticket to the second round after a stunning upset in Florida. In a tense Game 7 where they were heavily outshot, Montreal leaned on spectacular goaltending to edge the Tampa Bay Lightning 2-1. MTL wins series 4-3 and advances. Jakub Dobes was an absolute wall for the Canadiens, turning aside 28 of 29 shots to steal the series. Conversely, Andrei Vasilevskiy faced remarkably little work, seeing just nine shots all night, but two managed to slip by. Nick Suzuki opened the scoring late in the first period to give the visitors early momentum. Tampa Bay pushed back, finally breaking through midway through the second when Declan James converted on the power play. The decisive blow arrived at 11:07 of the third period. Alex Newhook took a feed from Lane Hutson and buried the game-winner to silence the home crowd. Montreal set a punishing tone with 43 hits in this ultimate elimination showdown. The Canadiens now take a hard-earned breath as they await their second-round opponent.

If you prefer defensive playoff hockey, look away. Game 1 of the Central Division showdown between the Avalanche and Wild turned into an absolute track meet, with Colorado eventually outlasting Minnesota in a 9-6 thriller. The Avalanche came out flying, building a quick 3-0 lead midway through the first period on goals from Sam Malinski, Jack Drury, and Artturi Lehkonen. Minnesota refused to fold, clawing back to take a 5-4 lead late in the second when Marcus Foligno buried a stunning shorthanded goal. That merely woke up the Colorado heavyweights. Devon Toews tied it before the second intermission, setting the stage for a dominant third period. Cale Makar took over, scoring twice in the final frame to earn first-star honors, while Nazem Kadri and Nathan MacKinnon added the daggers. Jesper Wallstedt and Scott Wedgewood both had miserable nights in the crease, facing a relentless barrage of chances from two high-powered offenses. COL leads 1-0 in the series. Game 2 stays in Denver, where both coaches will undoubtedly be preaching structure.
