The Night in Review

The Bell Centre was absolutely shaking on Friday night. Lane Hutson played the hero just two minutes into overtime, lifting the Canadiens to a thrilling 3-2 victory over the Lightning and giving Montreal a 2-1 series edge. It was exactly the kind of sudden-death drama that makes spring hockey so addictive. Out West, it was a miserable night for visiting goaltenders. The Utah Mammoth chased Vegas starter Carter Hart after he managed just eight saves on twelve shots, cruising to a 4-2 win to take control of their matchup. Meanwhile in California, Mikael Granlund orchestrated a massive third-period explosion, racking up the points as the Ducks turned a tense battle into a 7-4 rout of the Oilers. Both Anaheim and Utah now hold 2-1 series leads, reflecting a broader trend across the postseason bracket. Five of the eight first-round matchups currently sit at 2-1, guaranteeing we are in for some long, grueling battles over the next week. However, not everyone is sticking around for a Game 6 or 7. Carolina, Philadelphia, and Colorado are all sitting comfortably with dominant 3-0 leads, pushing Ottawa, Pittsburgh, and Los Angeles to the absolute brink of elimination. With three teams facing the ultimate do-or-die scenario, we could see our very first handshake lines of the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs before the weekend is over.

The Bell Centre erupted just over two minutes into overtime as Lane Hutson capped off a thrilling back-and-forth battle, securing a crucial 3-2 victory for the Canadiens over the Lightning. Playoff hockey in Montreal is always a spectacle, and this heavyweight Atlantic Division clash delivered. Alexandre Texier opened the scoring less than five minutes into the first period, but Tampa Bay quickly responded when Brayden Point capitalized on a power play. The Lightning pushed ahead early in the second period thanks to an unassisted effort from Brandon Hagel. However, Kirby Dach knotted the game at two midway through the middle frame, taking a feed from Arber Xhekaj to ignite the home crowd. After a tense, scoreless third period defined by heavy hitting and careful defensive play, the game shifted to sudden death. Andrei Vasilevskiy made 26 saves on the night, but he could not stop Hutson's dramatic strike at 2:09 of the extra frame. With the overtime triumph, MTL leads 2-1 in the series. Tampa Bay will try to regroup and steal home-ice advantage back in Game 4.

The Utah Mammoth chased Carter Hart from the crease early, building an insurmountable lead to seize control of their first-round matchup against Vegas. Hart managed just eight saves on twelve shots on a dismal night for the Golden Knights, as Utah stormed out of the gates. MacKenzie Weegar opened the scoring midway through the first period, and Dylan Guenther doubled the advantage with a power-play strike late in the opening frame. The offensive onslaught continued into the second period when Lawson Crouse took over. Crouse buried two goals in a five-minute span before the game was half over, pushing the Mammoth to a commanding four-goal advantage. Jack Eichel finally got Vegas on the board late in the second, and Nic Dowd added a consolation marker with under four minutes remaining in the third. However, Karel Vejmelka stood tall under heavy pressure, stopping 30 of 32 shots to secure the victory. With the massive home win, UTA leads 2-1 in the series. The Golden Knights will need to find answers quickly before Game 4 to avoid falling to the brink of elimination.

A massive third-period explosion turned a tense playoff battle into a rout as the Anaheim Ducks overpowered the Edmonton Oilers 7-4. Pulling the strings all night, Mikael Granlund racked up a power-play goal and three assists to earn first-star honors. Through forty minutes, the Pacific Division rivals traded blows to enter the final frame deadlocked at three. Edmonton erased an early deficit thanks to quick second-period strikes from Kasperi Kapanen and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. The momentum shifted permanently early in the third when Beckett Sennecke broke the tie at 2:53, followed by Leo Carlsson doubling the advantage just 42 seconds later. Even with Connor McDavid scoring a power-play marker midway through the period, goaltender Connor Ingram could not shut the door. Late insurance tallies from Jeffrey Viel and Jackson LaCombe put the game completely out of reach for the Oilers. Tensions finally boiled over when Vasily Podkolzin and Viel dropped the gloves in the dying seconds of the contest. Following the chaotic victory, ANA leads 2-1. Edmonton desperately needs a defensive reset heading into Game 4 to avoid being pushed to the brink of elimination.
