The Night in Review

Thursday night was all about pushing opponents to the brink, as the Carolina Hurricanes and Colorado Avalanche both seized commanding 3-0 series leads. The Hurricanes suffocated a desperate Ottawa squad in a tight road victory, backed by stellar goaltending from Frederik Andersen. Out West, Gabriel Landeskog and the Avalanche crushed the Kings' hopes on home ice, proving their roster depth is simply too much for Los Angeles to handle. While two series are dangerously close to sweeps, the Buffalo Sabres flipped the script in Boston. Alex Lyon stood tall in a hostile TD Garden to give Buffalo a crucial 2-1 series edge, putting the pressure squarely on the Bruins heading into the weekend. Across the rest of the first round, the bracket is heavily fractured between lopsided affairs and total deadlocks. Philadelphia joins Carolina and Colorado with a 3-0 stranglehold, while Dallas grinds out a narrow 2-1 edge over Minnesota. Meanwhile, heavyweights like Edmonton, Tampa Bay, and Vegas are all locked into tense 1-1 ties that look destined to go the distance. Survival mode officially kicks in now. Three different fanbases are waking up this morning knowing their next loss spells the absolute end of their Stanley Cup dreams. We will see if the Senators, Kings, and Penguins can find a pulse before the brooms come out.

The Buffalo Sabres went into hostile territory at TD Garden and leaned on their goaltending to seize control of their first-round matchup. After a scoreless opening frame defined by heavy hitting, Boston broke the deadlock early in the second period when Tanner Jeannot scored off a feed from Charlie McAvoy. The lead was short-lived. Midway through the middle frame, Bowen Byram answered for Buffalo to quiet the local crowd. The third period belonged entirely to the Atlantic Division champions. Just four minutes into the final frame, Alex Tuch delivered the decisive blow, converting passes from Peyton Krebs and Byram. Alex Lyon was an absolute wall in the Buffalo crease, stopping 24 of 25 shots to outduel Jeremy Swayman and earn second-star honors. Noah Ostlund added an insurance marker with under two minutes remaining to seal the 3-1 victory. With the road win, BUF leads 2-1 in the series. The Bruins will desperately try to level the playing field and avoid the brink of elimination when the two sides clash again for Game 4 in Boston.

Ottawa Senators

Facing elimination, the Ottawa Senators threw their weight around with 46 hits, but the Carolina Hurricanes' suffocating structure proved too much to overcome. Logan Stankoven silenced the desperate home crowd just five minutes into the first period, finishing off a slick feed from Taylor Hall to give the Metropolitan Division giants an early advantage. Ottawa pushed back relentlessly in the second. Drake Batherson finally broke through late in the middle frame, burying a setup from Nick Cousins at 16:06 to tie the game and send the arena into a frenzy. The joy was painfully short-lived. Barely a minute later, Jackson Blake responded for Carolina, restoring the lead at 17:29 with another assist from Hall. From there, Frederik Andersen slammed the door shut. The veteran netminder stopped 21 of 22 shots, calmly turning aside Ottawa's frantic third-period push while Linus Ullmark made 25 saves in a valiant losing effort. With the gritty 2-1 road victory, CAR leads 3-0 in the series. The Senators will need a miracle on home ice in Game 4 to keep their season alive.

Facing elimination on home ice, the Los Angeles Kings threw everything they had at the powerhouse Avalanche, but Colorado's depth proved too much in a 4-2 victory. Gabriel Landeskog silenced the crowd early, opening the scoring just over five minutes into the first period. The Kings pushed back when Trevor Moore equalized early in the second, but Cale Makar restored the Avalanche advantage midway through the frame. The real backbreaker for Los Angeles arrived early in the third period. With the Kings on the man advantage and desperate to tie the game, Artturi Lehkonen forced a turnover and buried an unassisted shorthanded goal to make it 3-1. Adrian Kempe gave the home fans a glimmer of hope with a power-play marker late in the final frame, but Brock Nelson sealed the result with an even-strength strike with under three minutes remaining. Scott Wedgewood was rock solid in the Colorado crease, stopping 24 of 26 shots. Following the victory, COL leads 3-0 in the series, leaving Los Angeles needing a miracle to survive the next matchup.
