⚡ The Night in Review

Rivalry night in the East turned into an absolute massacre on Thursday as the New Jersey Devils dismantled the New York Rangers 7-1, sending shockwaves through the Metropolitan Division. Luke Hughes and Evan Rodrigues sparked a relentless onslaught that handed the Rangers an embarrassing reality check and dragged New Jersey right back into the early-season playoff picture. Out West, the Utah Mammoth proved their dream start is no fluke, marching into Edmonton to knock off the Oilers 4-2. The statement road victory vaulted Utah into sole possession of first place in the Central Division at 6-2-0, while Vegas tightened its grip on the Pacific behind Mark Stone’s third-period natural hat trick in a 6-2 rout of Calgary. Overtime was the calling card of the night across the league, none more frantic than in Toronto. Jack Quinn stole the spotlight from Kirill Marchenko’s brilliant hat trick to lift Buffalo 5-4, while Victor Hedman, Brady Tkachuk, and Chicago rookie Artyom Levshunov all delivered dramatic extra-time winners for their clubs. At the bottom of the standings, the agony in Philadelphia drags on after a 2-1 defeat in Detroit left the Flyers winless through nine games at 0-6-3. Even with Matvei Michkov getting on the board, Philadelphia remains the league’s only team without a victory this season.

Kirill Marchenko put on a shooting clinic with a brilliant hat trick, but Jack Quinn stole the entire show in Toronto. Quinn delivered an amplified Gordie Howe hat trick, dragging Buffalo back from a 4-2 third-period deficit in hostile territory. After dropping the gloves with Troy Stecher late in the second frame, Quinn spearheaded a relentless Sabres push against Sergei Bobrovsky. Dennis Gilbert chopped the deficit to one midway through the third before Mattias Samuelsson snapped home the equalizer just two minutes later. Pushing the rivalry clash into overtime, Quinn struck again, threading a pinpoint pass to Owen Power, who buried the winner at 3:14 of the extra session. Quinn finished a chaotic, four-point night with two goals, two helpers, and a fighting major to leapfrog Buffalo over the Leafs in the Atlantic standings. The Sabres carry pure adrenaline into the weekend, while Toronto is left soul-searching after letting two points slip through their fingers.

Linus Ullmark and Semyon Varlamov turned Thursday night in Ottawa into a clinic of old-school goaltending, but it was Shane Pinto who finally broke the deadlock in the shootout. The Senators tightened their early-season grip on first place in the Atlantic with a gritty 2-1 victory over the Islanders. New York snatched the lead with just twelve seconds left in the opening frame when Matias Maccelli jumped on a turnover and buried an unassisted beauty. Ottawa pushed back late in the second, as Ridly Greig converted feeds from Warren Foegele and Artem Zub to knot the score. From there, both nets became fortresses. Ullmark turned aside 20 shots and matched Varlamov through a scoreless third period and a breathless sudden-death overtime before Pinto beat the veteran Russian netminder for the decisive shootout marker. Now rolling at 6-2-0, Ottawa is proving its hot start is no fluke as they prepare for a demanding weekend slate.

Victor Hedman still commands the ice when space opens up. Tampa Bay’s towering captain sealed a wild, back-and-forth battle, finishing a feed from Pontus Holmberg two minutes into overtime to lift the Lightning to a 4-3 victory over Seattle. Tampa Bay dictated the physical tone with 30 hits, but had to overcome Ryan Winterton’s early strike. Brandon Hagel took over from there, scoring late in the first period and again early in the second. Seattle punchily responded in the third; Jared McCann ripped a power-play marker, and after Ilya Mikheyev reclaimed the lead midway through the frame, Matty Beniers knotted it at 3-3 with just over four minutes remaining. Philipp Grubauer stood tall with 31 saves to earn Seattle a hard-fought road point, but Hedman had the final word, snapping Tampa into a 5-2-0 start. The Lightning look every bit like an Atlantic heavyweight as their homestand rolls on.

Brady Tkachuk single-handedly turned Vancouver's dream start into a nightmare in Sunrise. The Canucks looked poised to snap their early-season slump after Liam Ohgren and Elias Pettersson built a two-goal cushion in the opening frame, while Leevi Merilainen stood tall with 36 saves to preserve the lead well into the third. Then Tkachuk took over. Midway through the final period, the power forward cut the deficit in half, banking in a feed from brother Matthew and Aaron Ekblad. Vancouver retreated into a shell and paid the ultimate price with just thirteen seconds left on the clock, when Tkachuk crashed the crease to bury Carter Verhaeghe's rebound and force overtime. Having already stolen Florida a point, Tkachuk completed the natural hat trick 2:23 into the extra session, wiring a Seth Jones pass past Merilainen to cap an improbable 3-2 victory. For the reeling Canucks, it is a devastating collapse that drops them to 2-6-1, while Florida carries massive momentum into the weekend.

Rivalry games rarely unravel this violently, but New Jersey turned Thursday's Hudson River clash into an absolute nightmare for the visiting Rangers. Evan Rodrigues sparked the rout with an unassisted strike late in the first, setting the stage for a four-goal barrage in the second that chased all hope from the New York bench. Luke Hughes led the charge from the blue line, striking just eighteen seconds into the middle frame before adding his second of the night late in the period. In between, Nico Hischier and Arseni Gritsyuk buried goals only thirty-one seconds apart to turn the game into a runaway blowout. Dylan Garand suffered through a miserable evening between the pipes for New York, stopping just nine of thirteen shots before the defense collapsed entirely. Even Pavel Dorofeyev’s third-period power-play marker brought zero relief, especially after Cody Glass salted the wound with a shorthanded tally that triggered an Alexis Lafrenière misconduct. Expect fireworks the next time these bitter rivals cross paths.

Philadelphia’s agonizing search for a first victory of the season drags on, and this one will sting. Matvei Michkov offered early hope late in the first period, intercepting a loose puck and snapping an unassisted beauty past Daniil Tarasov to put the Flyers ahead. But Detroit clamped down and gradually tilted the ice. Early in the second frame, Albert Johansson stepped into a Dylan Larkin feed to pull the Red Wings level. From there, Joseph Woll did everything he could to keep Philadelphia afloat with 24 saves, yet Detroit’s persistence finally paid off late in regulation. With less than five minutes left on the clock, Andrew Copp crashed the net to bury a setup from Michael Rasmussen and Nate Danielson, delivering the dagger. The 2-1 defeat plunges the Flyers to an abysmal 0-6-3, while Detroit grabs two crucial points to stabilize their rocky start. The Wings now look to build real momentum, while Philly remains desperate to stop the bleeding.

Artyom Levshunov delivered the signature moment of his young career just 97 seconds into overtime, burying a feed from Connor Bedard and Patrick Kane to rescue a 4-3 victory for Chicago after a spirited Winnipeg comeback. The Blackhawks stormed out to an early two-goal cushion in the first period behind Bedard’s power-play strike and an unassisted effort from Frank Nazar, but the Jets refused to fold quietly. Neal Pionk spearheaded the rally, scoring Winnipeg’s opening tally before setting up Kyle Connor’s power-play blast early in the second and Alex Iafallo’s tying goal five minutes into the third. Spencer Knight stood tall under heavy fire, turning aside 31 shots to absorb Winnipeg's punishing 34-hit barrage. That goaltending set the stage for Bedard and Kane to orchestrate a surgical transition in the extra frame, sliding the puck across to Levshunov for the walk-off dagger. The Blackhawks will look to bottle that late-game magic as their homestand rolls on this weekend.

Nashville nearly pulled off an outrageous theft on Thursday night, but Macklin Celebrini ensured San Jose got the last laugh. The Predators pushed the game to the brink when Steven Stamkos beat Alex Nedeljkovic with just one second remaining in regulation, burying a Filip Forsberg feed to erase what had been a disciplined Sharks effort. San Jose built their lead behind early grit and young flair. Following a spirited bout between Zack Ostapchuk and Nicolas Hague in the opening minutes, Mason Marchment broke the ice before Will Smith doubled the cushion early in the third period. Ryan O'Reilly halved the deficit on a Nashville power play midway through the frame, sparking the late push that culminated in Stamkos's buzzer-beater. After Juuse Saros and Nedeljkovic traded stellar stops through a breathless overtime, Celebrini delivered the shootout decider with cold-blooded composure. It is a gutsy two points for a blossoming Sharks squad that proved it could absorb an absolute gut punch at the horn and still skate away victorious.

Matt Boldy put on an absolute clinic in Saint Paul, delivering a hat trick to power Minnesota to an edge-of-your-seat 5-4 victory over their division rivals. Boldy ignited the Wild on a first-period power play, answered Mason McTavish’s equalizer early in the second, and completed the three-goal night late in the middle frame off a slick setup from Kirill Kaprizov. With Quinn Hughes running the show from the blue line with two assists, Minnesota appeared to have things locked away with a 5-2 cushion entering the third. St. Louis refused to go quietly, however. Robert Thomas broke away for a shorthanded strike with four minutes left, and Dylan Holloway buried a Cam Fowler feed with just fifteen seconds remaining to pull within one. Jesper Wallstedt weathered the final frantic seconds to preserve the win and push Minnesota to 5-2-1. If Boldy and Kaprizov keep humming like this, the Wild are going to give everyone fits in the Central.

Utah is quickly proving its hot start is no fluke, marching into Edmonton and knocking off the Oilers 4-2 to solidify top spot in the Central Division. The turning point arrived late in the second period. Just 23 seconds after Leon Draisaitl buried a Connor McDavid feed to slash Utah's lead in half, Logan Cooley snatched the momentum right back. Cooley took a slick setup from Vincent Trocheck and beat Devon Levi, capping a stellar two-point night. Special teams paved the way early, with Barrett Hayton and Clayton Keller converting on power plays before Shakir Mukhamadullin gave Edmonton hope early in the third. Karel Vejmelka stood tall under late pressure, turning aside 22 shots before Keller potted his second of the evening with 28 seconds left on the clock. At 6-2-0, this resilient Mammoth squad looks legitimately dangerous, and their current road trip will show if they can stay atop the West.

Mark Stone delivered a third-period masterclass, burying a natural hat trick to turn a divisional battle into a 6-2 Vegas rout over the reeling Flames. The Golden Knights set the tone just 25 seconds in when Brett Howden converted a feed from Mitch Marner, followed by Jack Eichel’s unassisted shorthanded strike midway through the frame. Jake Middleton offered Calgary brief hope with a shorthanded tally of his own halfway through the second, but Braeden Bowman answered on that same power play just 48 seconds later. From there, it was the Mark Stone show. The Vegas captain struck 66 seconds into the third, buried his second off an Ivan Barbashev setup, and capped the natural hat trick on the power play with under four minutes to play. Frustrations boiled over moments later as Middleton and Raphael Lavoie earned misconducts. Sitting at 7-2-0, Vegas looks like the undisputed class of the Pacific, while the 1-6-0 Flames need answers fast.
