⚡ The Night in Review

Mitch Marner delivered Saturday night's marquee moment in the desert, burying an overtime dagger against the Kings to push the Vegas Golden Knights to a league-leading 5-1-0 record. The bitter defeat leaves Los Angeles winless, while Edmonton maintained pace in the Pacific by cruising past San Jose 3-1 to keep their regulation unbeaten streak alive. The Central Division experienced its own shakeup as the surging Utah Mammoth physically dismantled Buffalo 4-1, riding 33 hits and four unanswered goals to vault straight into first place. In Sunrise, Kirill Kaprizov turned in a dazzling four-point clinic to carry Minnesota past Florida, while Toronto weathered Nathan MacKinnon’s early storm in Denver to pull off an emphatic 6-3 comeback win. Drama flared late in New York when Tampa Bay forward Brandon Hagel buried two goals in a dizzying 21-second span to cap a stunning hat trick. Meanwhile, Montreal’s Jacob Fowler and Detroit’s Daniil Tarasov authored a vintage 65-minute scoreless goaltending duel at the Bell Centre before the Canadiens finally secured the shootout bonus point. The early-season panic button is already being tested in both Calgary and Philadelphia. Following fresh road stumbles on Saturday, the Flames and Flyers remain the NHL’s only two winless clubs, combining for a miserable 0-9-2 mark to open the campaign.

Fraser Minten had his fingerprints all over TD Garden on Saturday night, delivering a three-point masterclass that deepened Philadelphia’s early-season misery. Boston dictated the pace from the outset, breaking through late in the first period when Pavel Zacha converted a feed from David Pastrnak. Mason Lohrei doubled the advantage late in the second, but Minten truly took over in the final frame. The young forward set up Marat Khusnutdinov just two minutes into the third, and after Porter Martone briefly gave the Flyers life with a power-play tally, Minten capped his evening by burying Boston’s fifth goal past a shelled Dan Vladar. Minten and Martone even traded ten-minute misconducts during a feisty scrum with just over a minute remaining, putting an exclamation point on a bruising contest. While Jeremy Swayman needed to make just 14 saves in a comfortable victory, Philadelphia drops to a bleak 0-4-2. The Bruins look every bit like an Atlantic Division powerhouse as they prepare to take this potent attack on the road.

Special teams dictated everything in Newark, and New Jersey’s power play proved utterly merciless. After Linus Karlsson opened the scoring for Vancouver with an early man-advantage tally, the Devils snatched control and never looked back. Captain Nico Hischier led the charge, answering quickly midway through the first period before setting up Jesper Bratt early in the second. Jesper Boqvist chipped in an even-strength marker off an Amadeus Lombardi feed, but the backbreaker came with just ten seconds left in the middle frame. Working on another man advantage, Hischier buried his second goal of the night past Leevi Meriläinen off slick passing from Jack Hughes and Bratt. From there, Jake Allen slammed the door. The veteran netminder stopped 20 of 21 shots to earn top-star honors, steering New Jersey through a quiet third period to seal the 4-1 victory. The Devils climb back to .500 at 2-2-0, while Vancouver slumps to 2-4-0 and must urgently sort out a penalty kill that surrendered three goals on the night.

Edmonton proved in San Jose that they do not need Connor McDavid to do all the heavy lifting to keep their regulation unbeaten streak alive. Mattias Ekholm opened the scoring late in the first period, snapping a shot past Yaroslav Askarov to cap a composed opening twenty minutes. After a scoreless, grinding middle frame where the Sharks threw their weight around with 34 hits, the Oilers blew the contest open early in the third. Vasily Podkolzin cashed in on a slick feed from McDavid just over three minutes into the final period, and Alex Formenton doubled the cushion barely two minutes later. Macklin Celebrini gave the SAP Center crowd something to cheer midway through the third, combining with Michael Misa to spoil Tristan Jarry's shutout bid, but Jarry stood tall with 19 saves to secure the 3-1 victory. Now 4-0-1, Edmonton looks primed to challenge for the Pacific Division crown as their early-season momentum continues to build.

Kirill Kaprizov turned Sunrise into his personal playground on Saturday night, delivering a dazzling four-point performance to power Minnesota past Florida. The Wild struck just 53 seconds into the contest when Matt Boldy converted a feed from Kaprizov, and the Russian superstar doubled the lead on the power play five minutes later. Florida brought their trademark bite—ignited by a fiery first-period scrap between Bokondji Imama and Michael McCarron—and Matthew Tkachuk halved the deficit early in the second frame. Yet Kaprizov extinguished any comeback hopes less than three minutes later, snapping home his second of the night. Between the pipes, Jesper Wallstedt was calm amid the chaos, turning aside 29 of 30 shots as tempers flared with late-game misconducts. Kaprizov then punctuated his stellar evening by sliding in an unassisted dagger with 1:04 remaining to seal the hat trick. At 3-1-1, Minnesota looks every bit like a heavyweight contender as their road trip continues.

Utah climbed to the top of the Central Division on Saturday night, outmuscling Buffalo with a punishing 33-hit performance and four unanswered goals in a 4-1 victory. Tage Thompson gave the Sabres early hope on a first-period power play, but Kailer Yamamoto responded just two minutes later to restore balance. The contest truly tilted late in a chaotic second period. Even after Karel Vejmelka was assessed a rare ten-minute misconduct midway through the frame, the Mammoth netminder remained dialed in, turning aside 23 of 24 shots on the night. Nick Schmaltz broke the deadlock on the man advantage with under five minutes left in the second, followed quickly by Anders Lee burying a setup from John Marino. MacKenzie Weegar and Peyton Krebs dropped the gloves before the intermission, but Marino silenced any Buffalo momentum just 1:45 into the third with a power-play marker. Sitting at 4-2-0, the bruising Mammoth look every bit like division frontrunners as their road swing rolls on.

Sixty-five minutes of pure, unadulterated goaltending brilliance left the Bell Centre breathless before Zachary Bolduc finally broke the stalemate. Montreal netminder Jacob Fowler and Detroit’s Daniil Tarasov engaged in an old-school duel, each turning aside all 30 shots faced through three scoreless periods and a frantic three-on-three overtime. Both clubs brought plenty of bite, combining for 41 hits in a grueling Atlantic Division battle where open ice was virtually non-existent. Tarasov denied a flurry of dangerous chances late in the third to secure Detroit a point, but Fowler refused to blink at the other end. After 65 minutes failed to produce a single goal, Bolduc stepped up in the shootout and cleanly beat Tarasov for the game-winner. The razor-thin victory nudges Montreal to 2-2-1, while the Red Wings sink to 1-3-1, desperately needing their offense to wake up before this slump deepens.

Ottawa stared down an early two-goal deficit against a veteran-laden Nashville squad, but Tim Stützle simply refused to let the Senators fade. The Predators dictated the opening twenty minutes, striking first through Ross Colton before Jonathan Marchessault buried a power-play blast set up by Steven Stamkos and Roman Josi. But the tide turned midway through the second period when Stützle hammered home a man-advantage marker of his own to breathe life into the building. With under two minutes remaining in regulation, Drake Batherson crashed the net to jam home the equalizer off feeds from Stützle and Shane Pinto. Following a breathless overtime, Pinto completed the heist in the shootout, outwaiting Matt Murray to seal the 3-2 victory. Linus Ullmark shut the door late, pushing Ottawa to a sparkling 4-1-0 record and proving early this season that no third-period lead against them is safe.

Forty minutes of scoreless hockey felt like an old-school defensive standoff, but the real drama waited for the final thirty seconds of regulation in Pittsburgh. Connor Dewar finally broke the deadlock two minutes into the third period, beating Jake Oettinger off a clever setup from Blake Lizotte. It looked like that lone tally would hold up behind Arturs Silovs, who stopped 24 of 25 Dallas shots on the night. But with only thirty seconds remaining on the clock and Oettinger pulled, Tyler Seguin pounced on a feed from Jason Robertson to knot the game at one and send it to extra time. After five frantic minutes of three-on-three solved nothing, Rickard Rakell delivered the decisive dagger in the shootout, securing Pittsburgh a gritty 2-1 victory. Despite Dallas throwing 23 hits and dictating the physical pace, the Penguins clung on to jump to 3-2-1. If Silovs continues looking this unflappable in the crease, Pittsburgh's early-season climb in the Metropolitan is going to gather serious steam.

Carolina’s four-minute flurry early in the second period turned a tight road game into a runaway rout in Chicago. After Mark Jankowski opened the scoring with under a minute left in the first, the Hurricanes broke the Blackhawks on special teams. Sebastian Aho raced away for a shorthanded dagger two minutes into the middle frame, and Jackson Blake doubled the cushion just 79 seconds later. Roman Kantserov briefly stemmed the bleeding for Chicago, but Blake set up Tyler Hall moments later to cap a three-goal barrage that sent Spencer Knight scrambling. Jordan Martinook buried a fifth goal early in the third, ensuring a breezy night for netminder Brandon Bussi, who turned aside 24 shots. Chicago rookie Oliver Moore managed a late consolation tally, but the Blackhawks remain stuck in the Central Division basement at 1-5-0. Carolina, meanwhile, looks like an absolute juggernaut atop the Metropolitan as their road trip rolls on.

Columbus looked completely in control after twenty minutes, riding late strikes from Valeri Nichushkin and Kent Johnson to a comfortable 2-0 cushion. Then Ross Johnston threw down the gloves with Mathieu Olivier just twenty-one seconds into the middle frame, and the home crowd roared to life. Dylan Holloway took over as catalyst, racking up three assists in a six-minute blitz that saw Jake Neighbours cut the deficit before Jimmy Snuggerud buried two goals in rapid succession to flip the script. Columbus mounted a push midway through the third when Cole Sillinger knotted the game at three, but Jonatan Berggren answered less than three minutes later off a Mason McTavish feed. Pavel Buchnevich sealed the 5-3 comeback unassisted with forty-three seconds remaining. After flashing that kind of explosive resilience, St. Louis will look to carry their newfound offensive rhythm into next week.

Nathan MacKinnon looked ready to run the Maple Leafs out of Ball Arena with a dazzling first-period double, but William Nylander and Auston Matthews completely flipped the script in Denver. Nylander took over midway through the second, tying the game on a power-play strike before setting up a stunning sequence late in the frame. Just 46 seconds after Nylander knotted the score at 3-3 with his second of the night, rookie Easton Cowan buried a Morgan Rielly feed to push Toronto ahead for good. Matthews then delivered the dagger on the power play midway through the third before adding an unassisted empty-netter to cap a four-point performance of his own. Sergei Bobrovsky weathered Colorado’s 33-shot storm, turning aside 30 to outduel Mackenzie Blackwood on a frustrating night for the Avalanche defense. Now sitting at 3-2-1, Toronto heads home with serious offensive momentum, having silenced one of the league’s most hostile rinks.

Brandon Hagel saved his best magic for the dying minutes in Elmont, burying two goals in a dizzying 21-second span to break a deadlocked third period and secure a hat trick. Tampa Bay appeared in total control early after Jake Guentzel opened the scoring unassisted and Hagel doubled the lead, but the Islanders refused to roll over. New York punched back during a chaotic second period that featured a heavyweight tilt between Scott Sabourin and Logan Stanley. Tony DeAngelo, Jean-Gabriel Pageau, and Brayden Schenn—who struck on the power play with just seven seconds left in the frame—erased Guentzel’s second marker of the night to pull New York even at 3-3. Just as overtime loomed, Hagel went to work, snapping the tie with under two minutes remaining before immediately sealing the 5-3 win with another strike past Ilya Sorokin. Now sitting atop the Atlantic Division at 4-1-0, the Lightning look like an offensive juggernaut finding its midseason stride in early October.

Calgary’s nightmare start deepened on Saturday, with Ryan Poehling delivering the decisive blow on the penalty kill to keep the Flames winless at 0-5-0. After Jackson LaCombe and Frank Vatrano traded first-period punches with Morgan Frost, the Flames appeared to have seized momentum late in the second when Aydar Suniev snapped home Matt Coronato’s second helper of the night to tie things at 2-2. Instead, the Ducks flipped the script early in the third period. Down a man, Pavel Mintyukov sprung Poehling on a rush, and the forward beat Dustin Wolf cleanly at 5:35 for a deflating short-handed dagger. Ville Husso shut the door the rest of the way, stopping 27 of 29 shots, before Nikita Nesterenko iced Anaheim’s fourth win in five games with three minutes left on the clock. While the Ducks are flying high near the top of the Pacific, the panic button in Calgary is officially glowing red ahead of their upcoming homestand.

Mitch Marner is already paying massive dividends in the desert. In a tight, physical Pacific Division clash where every inch of ice felt contested, the marquee playmaker delivered the dagger at 2:40 of overtime on the power play to push Vegas past Los Angeles 2-1. Special teams dictated the entire night. Vegas broke a scoreless deadlock early in the second period when Trevor Connelly cashed in on the man advantage, only for Artemi Panarin to answer four minutes later with a power-play strike of his own. The hostility boiled over shortly after when Scott Laughton and Nic Dowd dropped the gloves, but goaltenders Carter Hart and Darcy Kuemper slammed the door shut from there, trading stellar saves to force the extra session. With a Kings skater in the box during three-on-three play, Marner worked a slick sequence with Mark Stone and Connelly before burying the winner past Kuemper. Vegas climbs to a division-leading 5-1-0, while the winless Kings (0-2-2) must regroup quickly before their road trip slips completely out of reach.
