Buffalo Sabres
50-23-9
The Montreal Canadiens have punched their ticket to the third round, breaking hearts in upstate New York with a 3-2 overtime victory in a dramatic Game 7. Facing elimination in a hostile environment, Montreal stormed out of the gates. Phillip Danault opened the scoring just four and a half minutes in, and Zachary Bolduc doubled the lead on the power play late in the first period. The top-seeded Sabres refused to go quietly, however. Jordan Greenway sparked the comeback midway through the second, and Rasmus Dahlin found the equalizer early in the third to set the stage for peak hockey tension. Goaltender Jakub Dobes kept the Canadiens alive by stopping 37 of 39 shots, weathering Buffalo's relentless push. The hero moment finally arrived at 11:22 of the extra frame when Alex Newhook buried a feed from Alexandre Carrier to end the Sabres' season. As MTL wins series 4-3, the Canadiens now advance to the Eastern Conference Final, where they will try to keep this magical playoff run alive against their next challenger.
