The Night in Review

David Pastrnak and the Boston Bruins refused to pack their bags on Tuesday night. Facing a hostile crowd in upstate New York and the sudden end of their season, Boston clawed out a dramatic 2-1 overtime victory against the Sabres to force a Game 6 and keep their Stanley Cup dreams breathing. Buffalo still holds a 3-2 series edge, but the momentum has officially shifted. Desperation was the theme of the evening out West as well. The Edmonton Oilers came out breathing fire on home ice, ambushing the Anaheim Ducks to secure a 4-1 win and stave off elimination. Leon Draisaitl and the Oilers are still down 3-2 in the series, but they live to fight another day. Meanwhile, Kirill Kaprizov took absolute control down in Texas. The Wild superstar dominated Game 5, leading Minnesota to a 4-2 victory that pushes the heavily favored Stars to the absolute brink of elimination. Dallas now faces a terrifying must-win scenario on the road. Looking at the wider bracket, the Carolina Hurricanes and Colorado Avalanche are enjoying some well-earned rest after sweeping their respective first-round matchups. They get to sit back and watch the chaos unfold as they await their second-round opponents. And what beautiful chaos it is. With four different series now sitting at 3-2 and two more deadlocked at 2-2, the opening round is becoming a war of attrition. The margin for error is gone, and Game 7 territory is rapidly approaching.

Facing elimination on the road, the Boston Bruins refused to let their season end in upstate New York. The Sabres looked ready to close out the series early when Rasmus Dahlin fired a power-play goal just three and a half minutes into the opening frame, drawing assists from Jason Zucker and Tage Thompson. Rather than fold, Boston cranked up the physicality, throwing 43 hits to match the playoff stakes. Jeremy Swayman locked in, stopping 24 of 25 shots to keep Boston afloat. Elias Lindholm found the equalizer unassisted midway through the second period, turning the contest into a tense goaltending duel against Buffalo's Alex Lyon, who made 27 saves. The drama crested in sudden death. Nearly ten minutes into overtime, Hampus Lindholm set up David Pastrnak, who snapped home the game-winner to silence the Buffalo faithful and rescue Boston's season. The Bruins survived the night, but BUF leads 3-2. The series now shifts back to TD Garden for Game 6, where Boston will try to force a winner-take-all showdown.

Kirill Kaprizov took over Game 5 in Dallas, pushing the heavily favored Stars to the brink of elimination. The Wild superstar factored into three goals, setting the tone early by feeding Mats Zuccarello just under four minutes into the first period. Dallas responded on the power play through Miro Heiskanen, but Minnesota delivered a crushing blow late in the middle frame. With just 32 seconds remaining in the second period, Matt Boldy converted on the man advantage off a passing sequence from Quinn Hughes and Kaprizov to snatch the momentum heading into the intermission. Michael McCarron extended the Minnesota lead early in the third. Jason Robertson gave the Dallas faithful late hope with a strike with under four minutes remaining, but Kaprizov slammed the door shut at 18:00 to seal the 4-2 victory. Jesper Wallstedt was steady in the road crease, turning aside 20 shots to outduel Jake Oettinger. Following the crucial road victory, MIN leads 3-2. The Wild now head back to St. Paul for Game 6 with a chance to send the 112-point Stars packing.

Facing elimination on home ice, the Edmonton Oilers came out breathing fire to keep their season alive against the Anaheim Ducks. The Oilers ambushed Anaheim early, building an insurmountable 3-0 lead by the midway point of the first period. Vasily Podkolzin opened the scoring just over two minutes in, followed quickly by a Zach Hyman strike. When Leon Draisaitl chased Ducks starter Lukas Dostal with a third Edmonton goal at 10:13, the building was absolutely deafening. Connor Ingram was stellar in the Edmonton crease, turning aside 29 shots and only yielding a power-play marker to Alex Killorn midway through the second period. Draisaitl answered that brief Anaheim push just two minutes later with his second of the night on the man advantage, effectively sealing the 4-1 victory. The pressure shifts squarely back to the Ducks, though ANA leads 3-2 in the series. Both squads will pack their bags for Southern California ahead of a pivotal Game 6, where Edmonton will try to force a winner-take-all showdown.
