The Night in Review

Double overtime in the Stanley Cup Playoffs is where legends are born, and Jordan Martinook delivered exactly that for Carolina late Monday night. His heroic marker in the 84th minute secured a grueling 3-2 victory over Ottawa, giving the Hurricanes a commanding 2-0 series lead. Over in the Battle of Pennsylvania, the temperature is rising but Dan Vladar remains ice cold. The Flyers netminder stopped all 27 shots to silence Pittsburgh 3-0, sending Philadelphia home with a lopsided 2-0 advantage in the series. Across the playoff bracket, we are starting to see early separation, with Carolina and Philadelphia taking control while the rest of the matchups remain incredibly tight. Dallas desperately needed a response to avoid an early hole, and Jake Oettinger provided the stability to knot their series with Minnesota at one game apiece following a 4-2 win. Out West, the Edmonton Oilers survived a massive second-period collapse, edging the Anaheim Ducks 4-3 in a chaotic Game 1 thriller at Rogers Place. With six of the eight opening-round matchups sitting at 1-0 or 1-1, the tension is mounting rapidly across the league. The Penguins and Senators now face the daunting task of defending home ice down 2-0, knowing perfectly well that falling behind by three games is almost always a death sentence in the spring.

The Battle of Pennsylvania has officially boiled over, but Dan Vladar remained perfectly calm in the crease to give the Philadelphia Flyers a commanding playoff advantage. Vladar stopped all 27 shots he faced to shut out the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-0 in a physical contest that descended into utter chaos. After a tense, scoreless opening frame, Porter Martone finally broke the deadlock midway through the second period. The true backbreaker for Pittsburgh arrived just minutes later at 17:43, when Garnet Hathaway buried a crushing shorthanded goal to double the Philadelphia lead. Luke Glendening sealed the victory late in the third, but the final moments were completely overshadowed by a massive melee. Frustrations erupted with under two minutes remaining, resulting in six different misconduct penalties handed out to players including Kris Letang and Rasmus Ristolainen. The Flyers punished the Penguins with 48 hits and now head home completely in control, as PHI leads 2-0 in the series. Pittsburgh will need to find answers, and their composure, before Game 3 shifts to hostile territory.

Double overtime in the playoffs is where heroes are forged, and Jordan Martinook etched his name into Carolina lore late Monday night. After nearly eighty-four minutes of grueling, heavy-hitting hockey, Martinook finally ended the marathon. He buried a feed from Nikolaj Ehlers deep in the second overtime to secure a 3-2 victory for the Hurricanes. The dramatic finish means CAR leads 2-0 in this first-round matchup. Ottawa showed massive resilience just to push the game past regulation. Carolina jumped out to a two-goal advantage behind a first-period power-play strike from Logan Stankoven and a Sebastian Aho goal early in the second. But the Senators refused to fold. Drake Batherson sparked the comeback midway through the middle frame, and Dylan Cozens knotted the score late in the period. From there, it became a goaltending duel. Linus Ullmark was spectacular with 43 saves for Ottawa, but Frederik Andersen matched him save for save, stopping 37 shots to earn the win. The Senators now head back to Canada's capital desperate to hold serve on home ice in Game 3.

Dallas needed a massive response, and Jake Oettinger delivered exactly that to stabilize the first round for the Stars. Wyatt Johnston opened the scoring midway through the first period, though standout defenseman Brock Faber quickly answered for Minnesota. Special teams proved to be the ultimate difference early in the second frame. Capitalizing on the man advantage, Matt Duchene gave Dallas a lead they would never relinquish, finishing off a slick passing sequence from Mikko Rantanen and Miro Heiskanen. Jason Robertson added crucial even-strength insurance seven minutes into the third. When Faber netted his second of the night midway through the final period, the tension inside American Airlines Center skyrocketed. Oettinger simply refused to break, stopping 28 of 30 shots to earn first-star honors and shut down the Wild's comeback hopes. Johnston ultimately sealed the 4-2 victory with his second goal on a late power play with under a minute remaining. With the Series tied 1-1, this punishing Central Division battle now shifts north to St. Paul for a pivotal Game 3.

Playoff hockey is defined by wild momentum swings, and Rogers Place witnessed a classic on Monday night. Edmonton survived a massive second-period collapse to steal a thrilling 4-3 victory. The Oilers struck twice in exactly one minute late in the opening frame, courtesy of Jason Dickinson and Kasperi Kapanen. But the Ducks stormed out of the intermission completely rejuvenated. Troy Terry took over the middle period, scoring 19 seconds in and adding a power-play marker at 14:29 to cap a three-goal Anaheim surge. Trailing 3-2 in the third, the physical Oilers, who racked up a punishing 47 hits on the night, refused to fold. Dickinson netted his second of the game midway through the final period to knot the score. Then, with under two minutes remaining in regulation, Kapanen buried a feed from Vasili Podkolzin to seal the dramatic comeback. Following the win, EDM leads 1-0 in the opening round. Anaheim will try to shake off the late heartbreak and even the score when the teams clash for Game 2.
