Tampa Bay Lightning
48-23-6
Buffalo Sabres
47-23-8
Alex Tuch served notice that Buffalo is no longer content to be the Atlantic Division underdog. In a high-stakes showdown between the top two teams in the division, Tuch ignited the Sabres offense early, finding the back of the net just over five minutes into the opening frame. While Nikita Kucherov briefly silenced the home crowd with a power-play equalizer, the Sabres refused to fold. Josh Norris regained the lead for Buffalo before the first intermission, a momentum swing that forced Tampa Bay to play from behind for the remainder of the night. Jake Guentzel managed to knot the score early in the second, but Jason Zucker’s response less than four minutes later proved to be the decisive blow. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen was the backbone of the victory, turning aside 23 shots and frustrating a potent Lightning attack. Jack Quinn eventually sealed the 4-2 win with a late third-period strike. With both teams now deadlocked at 102 points, the race for the Atlantic crown just became a dead heat.
